September 2019 energy forecast: Entering the mystical desert

by Aug 30, 2019

Theme of the month: Unknowing, the void, freedom, victory

The Quote: “Emptiness is the only sane way to proceed this month. We may be tempted and seduced by visions and possibilities but they are just passing before our eyes.”

The Spread: September’s spread is called Resolution. It puts the month’s energies under the microscope with a more singular focus.

The gist: We are being freed from the bondage of manifestation and form. Not because form is corrupt, but because form passes away. Again and again, we are invited to explore the interface between physicality and emptiness. Again and again, we are invited to notice when we get attached to either form or formlessness: insisting on proof, or hanging out too long in bliss states. If we get snagged this month, look to this cause.

The Situation:
HUACHUMA (DIVINE JUSTICE)

Huachuma evokes the desert’s symbolism of absence, silence, not-knowing, mystical darkness. It is a potent antidote to the pursuit of knowledge as a means of navigation. Here, certainty – and the light in which the certainty arises – is antithetical to the path of absence. Why is this desert so important right now? Because without the profound corrective offered by the dark, we can be prone to fundamentalism: that is, a literal and personalised interpretation of the sacred. It becomes all about us, our vision, our dream, our contribution – in short, our self-importance.

The light, the blessed light, can inflate egos out of hand. We become special, instead of grounding our transcendent mystical experiences back into the the everyday desert of unknowing. We become full instead of empty. And emptiness is the only sane way to proceed this month. We may be tempted and seduced by visions and possibilities but they are just passing before our eyes. To paraphrase one of the desert fathers, we must instead keep death before our eyes in order to overcome cowardice. In this sense, the cowardice is grasping at certainty and form as a means of twisting away from the void of unknowing.

Keeping death before our eyes means living for this day in its totality, for within in it are the seeds of every possibility anyway. This is fluid space, dynamic, and we are getting oriented to operating without history, emotion and pattern recognition as the arbiters of experience. Moses took his people across the desert to the Promised Land. The desert’s greatest mirage, however, was that the Promised Land was a physical location. This new fluid space, beyond the dimensional gateway we have already crossed, is the promised land. Maybe it wasn’t what we expected, but then expectation itself is loaded.

Influences:
PERFECTION (INITIATION)

We are well acquainted with the dysfunctions of perfectionism: the will to micromanage destiny. As if destiny depends on our advice anyhow. Do we need any further reminder of how limited our wills actually are? The breadth of our vision from this vantage point is terribly narrow. Yet, as a species, we’ve always looked up and out as if perfection is written in the stars but not in this messy human form. We’ve made a cargo cult of messianic prophecy. No one is going to save us – not because we are beyond redemption and not because ‘we are the ones we’ve been waiting for’. But simply because there’s no one real to save in the first place.

Perfection is embodying this moment without leaving it to pursue the imagined ideal elsewhere. By doing so we shatter the boundaries of the false self and find that every subjective experience we were seeking is available to us right now. It is freeing us from the bondage of manifestation and form. There’s nothing wrong with form: it, too, is imbued with grace. But form is transitory; it passes away. Perfection is abiding in the field of totality where there’s nothing to seek; there is no sense lamenting what we have lost when it has already been reborn in the absolute.

Initiation, in turn, is meant to give way to flourishing. We are initiated into a new state of consciousness but this stage is only a transition device so we don’t try and root down into the ground that is shifting under our feet. How might this change our creations if we are not so wedded to form? If it really doesn’t matter? Here’s where we are heading: all those miracles performed by the mystics, sages, yogis, gurus and saints of old were based on the total breakdown between form and formlessness. We are the temple itself, housing heaven on earth, spirit in form. Again and again, we are invited to explore the interface between what shows up in our world and absence. Again and again, we are invited to notice when we get attached to either form or formlessness: insisting on proof, or hanging out too long in bliss states. If we get snagged this month, look to this cause. We are not in Kansas anymore and no amount of clicking our heels will take us back.

Unseen:
MAP (MOTHER EARTH)

The world just got a whole lot smaller. There is no place to hide and no place untouched by global movements. Splendid isolation is now a myth. Where are we placing our attention? The feedback mechanism via our nervous systems will be immediate. We can identify with the death throes of an empire, get seduced by the global drama, or pull back into our bodies as a microcosm of the whole. When we become the whole world in this manner, our redemption is assured and immediate. The new world is born inside us first.

Like Moses, we are the Map-makers across the desert. The waymarkers we put down now will inform a much larger mass of consciousness to come. When we interface between form and formlessness, we can see that this cartography of the soul is not a linear affair. The maps have been made; we just have to follow our own footsteps. And every time we falter, we can come back to the body, our physicality, as the touchstone of the work. Nature, too, reflects our own nature. Amid the collapsing timelines and weird dimensional hopping, nature restores us to our true selves.

In this divine dance between form form and formlessness, matter is given its due. The ascending spirituality of sky worship required sacrifices and superstitions. The cultural foundation of original sin required self-mortification. In the descending medicine of shamanism, the body contained an age’s worth of terror. As the divine feminine restores us to balance, our nexus with Mother Earth is restored to a mutually enriching symbiosis. At last, after so much purging and purifying, our bodies are becoming home. We have rebuilt our house and the doors are wide open to be inhabited by the divine. And that makes it so much easier to embody the ever-present now.

Seen:
HUÀSCAR (MESA)

The gatekeeper of the underworld, Huáscar, represents the integration of the shadow and the return of the children of the sun in the Inka tradition. Here, the Mesa is not just one person’s medicine bundle but the global mesa providing a neural network across the entire spectrum of human consciousness. In other words, there is an intelligence greater than the sum of its parts that has been activated – and we’re all part of it and it’s totally reliable.

Husácar symbolises the time we spent tending to our shadow, turning over the earth. We are the sin-eaters of our age. There is a relationship between this intense work of transmutation and the filigrees of light that are now overlaid on the disintegrating dark matrix of control. Karma is no longer our inheritance. New bridges – synaptic connections – have been formed. But none of it was possible without the work in that dense, dark soil. To say this is honourable work is an understatement.

We are being exhorted to see the disorientation, the apparent delays, the collapse of our expectations, as a victory. If things are not working as they worked before, it is because they belong to the old paradigm. We’ve been toiling in the underworld for a long time. We are now bringing our medicine to the surface to share with the world – but not to create an object of it or another identity. There are still circuits to complete, dots to connect. We are being invited to witness the completion with marvel, with wonder. The miracle is near and the miracle is a paradox: It will appear not of our doing but it has everything to do with us.

Needed for resolution:
CHAOS (LIGHTNING)

In chaos theory, a butterfly flaps its wings in Brazil, causing a tornado in Kansas. This is the non-linear physics of transformation. In other words, take nothing at face value. Chaos invokes a chain reaction among a vast network of interrelated factors and systems the result of which we cannot predict, much less measure with our old tools of cause and effect. Similarly, Lightning is a perfect storm of collisions and electrical charges. Chaos theory relies upon open systems in which novelty can arise. All of this implies we must be open to novelty itself, something brand new sohowing up in our world, no matter what form it takes – and especially if it seems insignificant. Let’s just call it Life’s way of keeping us humble.

A closed system, by contrast, is a closed mind and heart. But Life will not give up on us that easily. The best way to counter a closed system is by surprise: to hit our blind spot. This may be shocking, like the ground-shaking roar of thunder, but its purpose is to jolt us open to what’s on offer. By definition, it won’t meet our old assumptions. Together, it suggests a game-changing influence, opportunity or new experience that broadens our perspective in an electrical flash of light. The gentle butterfly caressing the air could be the catalyst for the emergence of an entirely new order in our lives. We might wonder (like the movie): The Gods Must Be Crazy. All the old rules don’t apply and we can’t capture lighting in a (Coke) bottle!

The resolution:
MOTHER EARTH (ALCHEMY)

“As above, so below; As within, so without”. The old alchemical formula finds both breadth and depth in the symbol of the cross, which in turn represents the union of opposites. Christ was suspended between heaven and Earth, his masculine body and his feminine soul. We, too, are crucified by duality, and tasked with being agents of reconciliation. We bear the tension of opposites (chaos) until they are unified at a higher order, but then what? What is the task when the task has been fulfilled? For one, we transcend task orientation. This is hard to take, simply because for so long we have laboured under a paradigm of progress, achievement, success and failure.

It suggests a void and yet not making the void a thing. If we try and enrol the void into our old model, it smacks of laziness, stagnancy and failure. What a way to perceive victory! Mastery in this sphere is not the mastery over something; rather mastery is synonymous with self-surrender. Adding it up, this means merging with the void itself. Here, there is no separation and no rush to form, since everything has already been realised. This is the desert of unknowing and the ground of peace that passes all understanding. When we fully accept this victory, all worldly triumphs will be a mere byproduct of our new orientation.
